What is ASCII Art?

ASCII art uses characters from the ASCII character set — letters, numbers, and symbols — arranged to form pictures and stylized text. Text-based ASCII art (also called FIGlet art) turns ordinary words into large decorative banners made entirely of printable characters.

Because ASCII art is plain text, it works in any environment that renders text: chat apps, code editors, terminals, forums, and social media. There are no images to upload or embed — just copy the characters and paste.

This generator uses FIGlet, the standard open-source ASCII art engine. FIGlet fonts define how each character is drawn across multiple rows of characters. Different fonts produce very different visual styles from the same input text.

Where to Use ASCII Art

  • Discord: paste into messages, server descriptions, or channel topics for a dramatic header effect
  • GitHub README: add a styled project title at the top of your README.md inside a code block
  • Reddit: use inside code blocks in posts and comments for styled headings
  • Terminal scripts: print a banner at the start of a shell script or CLI tool
  • Game chat: games with in-game chat often support plain text, making ASCII art work well for announcements
  • Email signatures: some email clients render plain text signatures in monospace, making ASCII art visible

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ASCII art?

ASCII art is a graphic design technique that uses printable characters from the ASCII standard to create images, logos, and text banners. It originated in the early days of computing when graphical displays were limited, and is still widely used in terminals, social media, and creative coding.

How do I use the ASCII art generator?

Type your text in the input box, choose a font style from the buttons below, and your ASCII art appears instantly. Click Copy to copy it to your clipboard, then paste it anywhere: Discord, Reddit, Twitter, a README file, a terminal, or a text message.

Where can I use ASCII art text?

ASCII art works anywhere that displays plain text with a monospace font. Popular uses include Discord messages and server banners, Reddit posts, GitHub README files, terminal output, email signatures, game chats, and social media profiles.

Why does my ASCII art look different after pasting?

ASCII art requires a monospace font to display correctly. Every character must be the same width. If the font is proportional (like most website fonts), the columns shift and the art breaks. For best results, paste into apps that use monospace fonts: Discord, terminals, code editors, and Reddit.

Why does ASCII art look best with short text?

Each letter in ASCII art is rendered as a block of characters that is 5 to 10 characters wide. A single word like "Hello" can span 50 or more characters across. Longer text quickly becomes very wide and may not fit on one line, especially on mobile screens.

What is the difference between the font styles?

Each style is a different FIGlet font. Standard is the classic balanced style. Doom and Graffiti have a bold aggressive look. ANSI Shadow adds a dimensional shadow effect. Calvin S and Mini are compact. Bloody has dripping letter shapes. Colossal and Block are very tall and wide.

Can I use special characters or numbers?

Yes. All font styles support letters A to Z (case-insensitive), numbers 0 to 9, spaces, and most common punctuation including exclamation marks, question marks, and periods. Some fonts may render certain punctuation differently.

Is this the same as a FIGlet generator?

Yes. This tool uses FIGlet, the standard ASCII art text engine originally written for Unix systems. FIGlet fonts are the industry standard for ASCII art text generation and are used by thousands of tools and websites.
