The 6 Underline Styles

  • Underline: Applies the Unicode combining low line (U+0332) after each character. The most widely compatible underline style, renders correctly in all modern apps and fonts.
  • Double Underline: Uses the combining double low line (U+0333) for two parallel underlines below each character. Useful for emphasizing key terms or headings.
  • Wavy Underline: Uses the combining tilde below (U+0330) to create a wavy or squiggly line under each character, similar to a spell-check indicator.
  • Overline: Applies the combining overline (U+0305) above each character instead of below, creating a line on top of the text.
  • Over and Under: Combines both the underline and overline marks so each letter has a horizontal line above and below, creating a framed or boxed-row effect.
  • Bold Underline: Converts letters to Mathematical Bold Unicode and then adds a combining underline. Produces bold weight text with an underline that cannot be replicated with standard Markdown.

Where Underline Text Works Best

  • Discord: Paste directly into messages or display names. Unlike Discord Markdown underline, Unicode underline does not require the double underscore syntax and works in contexts where Markdown is disabled.
  • Twitter and X: Bios and posts do not support Markdown, making Unicode underline the only way to add underlined text to a tweet or bio.
  • Instagram: Underline text in your bio or captions stands out and is not something the Instagram editor provides natively.
  • WhatsApp: WhatsApp has bold and italic but no underline. Unicode combining marks are the workaround.
  • YouTube: Channel names, descriptions, and comments accept Unicode combining marks.

Why use a Unicode underline instead of Markdown?

Markdown underline syntax (like HTML tags) only works inside apps that process Markdown, such as GitHub or certain note apps. Most social platforms, Discord messages, Twitter posts, and text fields render the raw characters and strip any HTML. Unicode combining marks travel with the characters themselves, so the underline is preserved wherever the text is pasted.

How does Unicode underline work?

Each character is followed by a Unicode combining diacritical mark that renders visually below (or above) the preceding character. What is Bold Underline?

Bold Underline converts each letter to its Mathematical Bold Unicode equivalent and then adds a combining underline. The result is bold text with an underline attached at the character level, which is not possible in standard Markdown since bold and underline are separate formatting layers.

Why does the underline disappear when I paste into some apps?
